Once in a Blue Moon

Mark your calendars for a “once-in-a-blue-moon” experience! On January 31, you will be able to see a Super Blue Blood Moon, which consists of a supermoon, blue moon and total lunar eclipse. An experience that hasn’t occurred in more than 150 years!

So what role does each one play to make this great experience happen? Well, it’s time to find out!

Blue Moon

The term blue moon is used when there are two full moons that happen within the same month. The first one took place on January 1, while the next will be on the 31st. Even though we use the term “once in a blue moon”, blue moons actually happen more often than you think. They typically occur every 2.7 years.

Supermoon

A supermoon happens when the moon is at its closest point to the earth. This makes the moon look larger in size and much brighter. During this occurrence, it is said that the moon is about 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter!

Lunar Eclipse

Finally, a lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes through the Earth’s shadow. This blocks the sun's light, which turns the moon into a deep red, which will be the highlight of the super blue blood moon! Lunar eclipses don’t occur every month, as the plane of the lunar orbit is slightly tilted from the Earth’s orbit. In order for a lunar eclipse to occur, the sun, moon and earth all need to line up.

If you don’t want to miss out on this one in a lifetime event, make sure to set those alarm clocks early to get the best glimpse. It will be an experience you will never forget!
