The Corporate Influencer

An info guide on the new it career

Do you ever think to yourself “who posted this cute Insta story for PacSun” or “what comedic genius is running the Wendys twitter account” Well i’m gonna pull back the curtain on the industry’s newest secret weapon, The Social Media Manager. I know, how interesting can a job be that has the word manger in it, well let me tell you, this one is quite an outlier.

Well to put it simply it is someone who runs a brands social media page. For example, a Social Media Manger is the equivalent to 2013 Justin Biebers publicist. She worked hard to make sure he had good engagement with his beloved belieber across all platforms, as well as providing a safe space to publish his public apologies.

In all seriousness a Social Media Manager has the important role of being the voice for the company. From an outside view it can seem like all glitz and glamor, and for the most part it is, but an in depth look reveals it takes more than knowing how to click share on a picture.

A social media managers overall responsibility is to lead social media strategy. They work hand in hand with their marketing team, to combine the main message, yet communicating it in a way that their audience is going to love and feel connected with. They also have the duty of getting a feel for what customers want and expect. This can be anywhere from products and features to what needs to be fixed/enhanced.

Content Creation is another key aspect of this job. Curating pleasing and engaging content is what propels a brand. It can be very tricky though, conveying a message has many aspects. The trickiest of them all is tone and wording. Due to something solely being text, if not careful your message can come off in a negative light. This leads to unhappy customers and a bad brand image.

One particularly unique responsibility to this career is being able to build relationships with influencers and celebrities. You may have seen brand vacations before, when a brand sends influencers out to private resorts so in turn they get publicity from all pictures and videos posted. Brands also love brand deals, influencers or celebs get paid to advertise a product whether that being a post, story, video, ect. This is great because it can be a cheaper solution than traditional ads while also still creating a large engagement. One sly way brands can get an extra ounce of publicity is by leaving comments on posts or something that is going viral.

Now we’re getting to question that is on everyones mind,*cue drumroll* the median salary in the U.S. is $52,551! Of course there are many factors that come into play when it comes to the pay, especially with this career. The city you are in really makes a difference. It does not take an astrophysicist to understand that you would make a lot more money in Los Angeles and New York City than in Topeka, Kansas. But with that being said there is still money to be made, but definitely something to consider

Social Media Management is expected to have an 8% growth by 2028, as well as 10% growth in the marketing field as a whole.

Amy brown- Tim Johnson

Amy brown is the icon behind some of the most viral tweets in brand history. She was the comedic genius behind Wendy's troll tweets. While she was in charge with the Wendy's account, people noticed how funny the tweets actually were and started following by the thousands. The brands tweets quickly started appearing across all platforms through meme pages. This was marketing heaven! Wendys was able to reach a wide audience with their deals and promotions through their platform without much cost. It also increased the overall emotion people had towards the brand which is the goal of any social media manager.

This job is perfect for someone who wants some spice in corporate America. It is not the normal 9–5, it can consist of taking photos of the team brunch at 9am but then a team meeting about a launch of new products at 10am. It allows people to use their fun personality and creativity in their work as well as having the ability to use their analytical and business skills. #SocialMediaBoss
