Seizure

A blonde woman collapses. She has a seizure in front of her fellow commuters on the cold, checkered floor, of a subway station corridor. She writhes in agony , her eyes roll back into her head. A man with a greasy combover turns to a schoolgirl with a rainbow colored backpack and says, “ Maybe we should roll her over on her back, like a baby when it’s sick.” The schoolgirl says, “ I learned in my health class, one has to carefully pry open the victim’s mouth like a clam with a hidden pearl, while being careful not to get bitten. You have to grab the tongue and hold onto it, without letting it get away — and make sure the victim doesn’t try to bite it off. ” A middle-aged woman with dark circles under her eyes arises from behind the schoolgirl. Her breath smells of coffee, whiskey, and cheap cigarettes, “ I’m not going to do that, ” she says, “ I’m not certified. ” The blonde woman beats her elbows and heels on the ground as she convulses and foams from the mouth.

A young businessman with a new briefcase says, “ I’m going to be late for my meeting! I have to go! I have to go now. I’m a lion ready to pounce on his prey! I’m getting promoted! I finally have my life the way I want it! I don’t wait for anyone! Not now, not ever, you hear me?! ” The young businessman runs into the back of a heavyset man. The heavyset man grunts, turns his head toward the young businessman, tilts to one side and regains his composure. The young businessman slams into the backs of those in front of him. He uses his briefcase as a battering ram. Some people scream, others are too tired. The young businessman sees a gap in the group up ahead. He leaps and tumbles over the blonde woman having a seizure. He lands on his freshly shaven face, fracturing every bone in it. Blood flowing into a puddle grows exponentially around the young businessman’s head as he lies facedown, briefcase still in hand. The blonde woman on the ground next to him has eaten her tongue. The sound of a passing train softly echoes into the distance, then another.
