Six Months

Naina opened the Bangladesh Military symbol emblished envelope and took out the letter . She unfolded the letter carefully . His handwritting was sloppier than before .

12 January , 2014

Dhaka , Bangladesh

Dear Naina ,

We got to south east sector yesterday so the letter delivery was delayed. I couldn’t wait for the delivery truck to arrive . This sector is more risky than the previous one . Our base is very close to the enemy line . But don’t be worried we will be back to the northern sector day after tomorrow , just a small wait of 42 hours .

I got the picture of our daughter .I ran around the whole base showing everyone our daughter’s photograph . She is so small and beautiful . She has your eyes. I think Basmah is the perfect name for her as her smile captured my heart in a moment . I can’t believe she will be two months old next week . I know I have been gone for six months and it was hard for you and the baby but I promise to make it up to you once I’m back . I can’t wait to hold my baby girl in my arms for the first time . Naina I promise to give you and Basmah all the happiness the world can give .

Our duty here at Congo ends in five days . We will be back by next Sunday . Can’t believe its been six months without you . It was so hard . I kept all your letters , there are 15 in total all starting with your inquiry about my health . Yes I am safe , Naina . I will be back to you and our newborn daughter in a few days . We will go to all the places you’ve wanted to go , we will do everything to make our happy family even more happier .

And I’ve got all the spices from the local market like you asked . Can’t wait to eat the Payesh you’ll make with those . Oh , can two month old babies eat Payesh ? If yes Basmah can enjoy your delicious Payesh with me . And I also bought candies for her . I don’t think she will be able to eat the hard candies but she’ll be able to eat the soft ones , right ? Obviously because they are soft . Give me a list about what else I should buy as I’m here for only a few more days .

Lastly , happy anniversary . It’s been seven years together . I have cherished every single moment that we’ve spent together . I’m sorry that I’m not there with you but you know that I love you . I have loved you from I don’t know when and I will love you till I don’t know how . You are the greatest thing that has ever happened to me . I miss you . And I will compensate the loneliness of six months by giving my all to you for the rest of our lives . I want to grow old with you . And my last wish will be to die holding your hand .

Tears rolled down her cheek as she held the letter in one hand and his helmet in the other. Jahid came back two days before he had promised but with seven bullet holes in his chest .
