The greatest gift my mom ever gave me

My mom gave me one of the greatest gifts imaginable when I was growing up. She never talked about her body size or shape in front of me. It wasn’t until I was an adult that I realized just how rare…

Working for Kode With Klossy

If you watch Project Runaway or love Taylor Swift, you definitely know who Karlie Kloss is. Past her successful career as a supermodel, Kloss is an entrepreneur. In 2015, the first Kode With Klossy (KWK) camps were started. KWK is a nonprofit that hosts free two week bootcamps for girls age 13-18 to learn programming. In the past, they’ve learned web development with Ruby or worked on VR apps. As of 2019, their curriculum consists of web development (HTML, CSS, and JavaScript) and mobile app development (Swift).

Each camp is a class of up to 25 scholars with 2 instructors — teachers from Teach For America-and 2 instructor’s assistants — typically KWK alumni or computer science college students. The small environment allows collaboration and community while ensuring that each student has an experience that they need.

Karlie Kloss is an incredible role model for me. In the future, I want to create my own nonprofit that works towards teaching young girls software development skills while linking them with strong tech mentors.

I actually found KWK on Instagram (@kodewithklossy), but unfortunately the camps were never offered in my area. Because of this, I couldn’t be a scholar until this year.

In February of my first year of college, I felt a pressure to get a job that furthers me in the tech field as I had only started coding in college. I applied for internships. I got rejected by internships. I felt lost. Luckily, I was reminded of Kode With Klossy. Their job opening included an Instructor and an Instructor’s Assistant (IA). I applied for the latter. I filled out a written application where I spoke about my experience as a CS 111X (Introduction to Programming at the University of Virginia) TA and why I was passionate about teaching others to code. After that, I was asked to complete a video interview. It was unlike any video interview I had done. KWK used a platform that showed the question, gave you thirty seconds to think, and recorded you for a minute. With only 5 questions, it was a pretty short interview.

About a month later, I received an email telling that I’ve been offered to be an IA in both Seattle and New York with an hourly rate of $16.50. I accepted the job and began the onboarding process — a fancy word for…
