Trust is a Big Responsibility

Trust is a big word when it comes to people doing the right thing, especially family. One thing I have discovered through life is to pick those you trust carefully.

We tend to take people at their word and expect the same in return. I have seen several situations when the people they trusted bit them on the backside, and they have lost everything.

I knew a gentleman who hired his school friend as his accountant. Several years down the track he gets a call from the Tax office notifying him that he owed them two hundred and forty thousand dollars. It certainly created a huge problem.

No amount of conversations would reverse the money owing. His so-called accountant friend had been robbing him for years. He was charged, but the money was gone.

A friend trusted someone selling birds on the internet, she didn’t think people were that dishonest. She lost three thousand two hundred dollars.

Another friend trusted her daughter to help her, so she gave her power of attorney. Within six months her daughter had sold her mother's property and committed her to an elderly person's home. Not one of us could do a thing, the mother died within twelve months.

If someone tells me they will do something specific and fail to, I find the first question is, what made me think they would do it? I trusted them. I have learned that if a person lets you down once, they are harder to trust the next time.

Trust is easy to earn, but very hard to keep. Out in this world, you need to choose the ones you trust very, very carefully.
