I read many books of R.K Narayan.

All his books reflect the society.
This book is based on two different types of women.
One Savitri, who is uneducated, mother of three and completely dependent of her husband. Another woman, Shanta Bai who is a graduate, left her husband and working in Savitri’s husband’s (Ramani) office.
Savitri was insulted and dominated by her husband. Whenever she feels unhappy, she lies quite in a private place , a dark room.
When she was betrayed by her husband,she leaves home , attempts suiside. She was saved by a key-maker who passed through that place.
What happens to her? She lives her life alone or goes back to her husband and children?

The village life style, the slang of the locality is shown extremely tasteful.
The author showed us the reality of a woman in the society. Even today the condition of many women in India is that of Savitri.

I am a great fan of R.K. Narayan.
