Ed Sheeran wins twice at The Ivors 2018

Ed Sheeran has taken home the Songwriter of the Year and PRS for Music Most Performed Work trophies at the 63rd Ivor Novello Awards.

His single Shape of You, cowritten by Steve Mac and Johnny McDaid, received the most broadcast, online and general performances in 2017, according to PRS for Music data.

On picking up the award, Sheeran thanked his collaborator Mac, adding: ‘He’s been coming for 24 years and never won one, so this is for you.’

Eric Clapton was later on hand to present Sheeran with the Songwriter of the Year trophy, prompting Sheeran to say: ‘I actually started playing guitar because of this man [Eric Clapton] behind me.’

Elsewhere, Stormzy took home the Album Award for his debut LP Gang Signs & Prayer, while Dave and Fraser T Smith were honoured in the Best Contemporary Song category for their track Question Time.

Lionel Richie was given the PRS for Music Special International Award, in recognition of a solo career that has earned him five Grammys and sold 90 million records worldwide.

This year’s Outstanding Contribution to British Music Award, also presented by PRS for Music, went to singer, songwriter and political activist Billy Bragg.

His old friend Tom Watson MP stepped up to present the trophy to Bragg, who said: ‘We are privileged as songwriters to bring people together… we can pass on something very important in the currency of songwriting. In these divisive times it’s our duty to ramp up the empathy in everything we do.’

The Best Original Film Score Award went to Mica Levi for her music to Jackie, while composers Joris de Man, Joe Henson and Alexis Smith took home the award for Best Videogame Score for Horizon Zero Dawn.

Later, Shane McGowan of The Pogues was given The Ivors Inspiration Award while hitmaker Cathy Dennis, who cowrote Kylie’s Can’t Get You Out of My Head and Britney Spears’ Toxic, received the Outstanding Song Collection gong.

Scottish composer Thea Musgrave received the Classical Award, while the International Achievement Award went to Billy Ocean and Manchester indie-rockers Elbow picked up the Best Song Musically and Lyrically for Magnificent (She Says). The full list of winners is below.
